This committee tracks legislation and promotes public education on developments that could impact aspects of reproductive rights in Florida. Past Hot Topics have included speakers from Planned Parenthood as well as a public vigil based on The Handmaid's Tale.

This committee tracks legislation and promotes public education on developments that could impact aspects of juvenile interactions with law enforcement in Florida. Past Hot Topics have included speakers from the Caruther's Institute discussing civil citations- the program that diverts youthful offenders from being arrested and having a record. Ongoing discussions with the NAACP are fostering dialog between law enforcement and church groups.

This committee tracks legislation and promotes public education on developments that could impact aspects of Education in Florida. The committee studies and reports on the charter school issue, curricula and other issues that impact the learning environment.  See Charter School Study.

Natural Resources and Climate Action Group - Email:  NaturalSolar@lwvpolk.org

This committee tracks legislation and promotes public education on developments that could impact aspects of natural resources and Solar in Florida. The past Hot Topics informed members on solar energy and a program start-up that would offer savings to homeowners wishing to install their own PV system, called the FLSUN Solar Cooperative. The committee also researches legislation that would impact both, fauna, flora, waterways, land and air in Florida.  The committee will promote a new campaign to ban plastic bags and                                                                   plastic straws in the county.  That includes supporting legislation that affects banning and protection of local                                                           control of these issues.  ​

This committee is active in pursuing voter registrations throughout the county.  The committee works closely with the Supervisor of Elections office particularly in the county schools.  They monitor developments that could impact voters rights in Florida. The committee also advocates expanded access to voters and to make the process easier. This committee encourages members to become trained to work at the polls during each election, and to become involved with urging every eligible citizen to vote.

​This committee tracks legislation and promotes public education on developments that could impact immigration in Florida. The committee plans to hold a Town Hall meeting with legislators and the public to discuss immigration and try to develop a dialog that can lead to comprehensive immigration reform.

Libraries and Literacy Committee - Email: Libraries@lwvpolk.org​

This committee tracks legislation and promotes public education on developments that could impact literacy and local libraries in Polk County. Past actions included educating the public on funds taken from libraries during the economic crisis in 2009, but not returned. The loss of these funds, have created real hardships for the patrons of the library. The committee seeks to educate the Polk County Commissioners who are the decision makers on restoring the library funding and the                                                                                        community on the role the libraries play in literacy across the community.

​This committee tracks legislation and promotes public education on developments that could impact gun violence in Florida. The committee has participated in protests supporting the #neveragain movement designed to pressure legislative action to protect students from gun violence on campus.

The Speakers Bureau provides speakers to civic groups and other organizations throughout the county to fulfill our commitment to community  education.  Topics include explaining Ballot Amendments both state and local as well as issues important to the League.  Volunteer speakers receive training and work experienced speakers as a team.
